چکیده
ABSTRACT Red giant asteroseismology can provide valuable information for studying the Galaxy as demonstrated by space missions like CoRoT and Kepler. However, previous observations have been limited to small data sets fields of view. The TESS mission provides far larger samples and, first time, opportunity perform asteroseimic inference from full-frame images full-sky, instead narrow pre-selected targets. Here, we seek detect oscillations in red giants Kepler field using 4-yr results a benchmark. Because use 1–2 sectors observation, our are representative typical scenario data. We clear ?3000 stars with another ?1000 borderline (low S/N) cases. In comparison, best-case predictions suggest ?4500 detectable oscillating giants. Of detections, measure ?? 570 stars, meaning ?20 per cent yield (14 one sector 26 two sectors). These yields imply that (1–2 sector) will result significant detection biases. Hence, boost number might need only ?max seismic input stellar property estimation. find little bias measurements scatter is about 5–6 2–3 ??. values, coupled uncertainties parallax, Teff, [Fe/H] grid-based approach, would internal 3 inferred radius, 6 mass, 20 age low-luminosity stars. Asteroseismology of red giants: photometric observations of Arcturus by SMEI
We present new results on oscillations of the K1.5 III giant Arcturus (αBoo), from analysis of just over 2.5 yr of precise photometric observations made by the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) on board the Coriolis satellite. A strong mode of oscillation is uncovered by the analysis, having frequency 3.47 ± 0.03 μHz. By fitting its mode peak, we are able offer a highly constrained direct estim...
متن کاملAsteroseismology of red-clump stars with CoRoTand Kepler
The availability of asteroseismic constraints for a large number of red giants with CoRoT and, in the near future with Kepler, paves the way for detailed studies of populations of galactic-disk red giants. We investigate which information on the observed population can be recovered by the distribution of the observed seismic constraints: the frequency of maximum power of solar-like oscillations...
متن کاملAsteroseismology with the Kepler mission
NASA's Kepler mission will fly a photometer based on a wide-field Schmidt camera with a 0.95 m aperture, staring at a single field continuously for at least 4 years. Although the mission's principal aim is to locate transiting extrasolar planets, it will provide an unprecedented opportunity to make asteroseismic observations on a wide variety of stars. Plans are now being developed to exploit t...
متن کاملSuper-Nyquist asteroseismology with the Kepler Space Telescope
Barycentric corrections made to the timing of Kepler observations, necessitated by variations in light arrival time at the satellite, break the regular time-sampling of the data – the time stamps are periodically modulated. A consequence is that Nyquist aliases are split into multiplets that can be identified by their shape. Real pulsation frequencies are distinguishable from these aliases and ...
متن کاملSuppression of quadrupole and octupole modes in red giants observed by Kepler
The asteroseismology of red giant stars has continued to yield surprises since the onset of high-precision photometry from space-based observations. An exciting new theoretical result shows that the previously observed suppression of dipole oscillation modes in red giants can be used to detect strong magnetic fields in the stellar cores. A fundamental facet of the theory is that nearly all the ...
